optima battery and outboards

I just bought a new optima blue top battery for my outboard but just read somewhere that you should not use optima batteries for outboard motors because they are not regulated...also should not use any mainainence free battery on outboards...

my outboard is a 73 85 hp. merc

is this true?

mmmm never heard of that myself ..... i've used many different kinds of batteries over the years and never had any problems, I currently only use big truck batteries .....

Thanks guys ....could it be only in the older outboards?

just read in my merc manual that to never use maintainance free......maybe that was before the optimas came out.......

I have a optima Marine/starting battery on my 60 hp Yamaha and it works just fine.
