A friend of mine who owns a local marina.

Has a 1950's , Johnson 48 hp.

I believe is what he told me .

He said it has a wrap around tank, on the motor itself.

And a brass prop.

I haven't seen it and know nothing about one that old.

He said it has never been run, it is still in the original packaging .

I know this isn't very accurate information.

But, if possible can someone give me a ballpark figure.

As to the value, he is interested in selling it.

I'll get more deatailed info. ASAP.

Thanks,

KYHunter

Get the model number, KYhunter. With that we/you can find out everything about the engine except what it should sell for. Only buyer and seller can determine that.

I suspect that a 48hp with an integral tank is older than the 50s.

If you're talking about one of the earliest big 50's, that's a real hernia maker. Good motors, very simple and reliable...the first ones were issued to military for use off the coast during D-Day. As to what its worth, that entirely subjective...its worth only what a buyer is willing to pay on the day it's sold...could be a bunch or not much at all. If you can get a model/serial number and copy of Peter Hunn's Old Outboard Book, there is a price guide in the back of it that should put you in the ballpark.

It appears in 46 and 49 there was a Big Four 50 hp.
8014 and 8015
In 43 there was a Stormboat 50hp. motor 8008.
In 1950 there was a 33.4hp.Speedfour 7031 Serial number 12001 and up.
In original packaging I think it would sell for a bunch but
You would need to expose it to the proper collectors.
You might watch ebay to get an idea what collectable motors sell for.Condition is everything.

48's were later on like in the '80's. The even numbers had all the whistles and bells, the -2 numbers were bare bones.
