Mercury-to-Yamaha Conversion

I have a 2001 Mercury 150HP Optimax and am considering repowering with a Yamaha 200HP 4-Stroke.

Since Mercury and Yamaha have been working together on engines, could I be lucky enough to be able to use my steering and controls in such a conversion? I know I'd have to install new instruments.

Has anyone done a Mercury-to-Yamaha conversion?

steering yes, controls no

if you can afford a yamaha 200 4 stroke, you can afford new controls.

You'll have to change throttle/shift cables, but there's an adapter to convert Merc main harness to work on the 225 4-stroke which was 100% Yamaha. Some gauges will work on either.

Re: Mercury-to-Yamaha Conversion

Thanks for the info. My 2001 ProLine 20Walk seems underpowered with the 150HP Optimax (42mph, max). It also sounds like the African Queen when trolling.

Although the 225HP 4-stroke would give super performance, it would void my hull warranty (200HP max). The warranty extends to 2011 and by then I'll be too old to hear all that 2-stroke noise.
