Re: tachometer setting 1988 200HP Yamaha. how many poles?
Sorry, I read in the post and You wrote 1998 there. In the subject I see now You wrote 1988...
Anyway, the Yamaha PDF manuals only goes back to 1998 as You have discovered.

You did not write if You use Yamaha orginal tachometer or other tachometer. But You maybe can get some help by checking Teleflex website about their tachometers. They have pole settings mentioned for various outboards.

Startpage:
http://www.tflx.com/tech.html

This page should answer Your question:
http://www.tflx.com/obtachtrad.html

Seems for 2-stroke Yamaha 90 thru 250 HP the alternator poles is 12 and You should set your tachometer for 12 poles.

But You have to check out this more carefully Yourself, above is only a general outline. You have to take responibility Yourself to set correct poles in your tachometer. Do not blame me if anyting goes up in smoke.

Good luck.
