Starting Motor Question

Hi, I am selling a Merc 60 1966 for my Mom, had been my Dad's who has passed on....my question is this...how do I check to see if the motor starts...all I ever remember was Dad putting it in a barrel of water...is this necessary to do if you just want to start it...what are the steps to go through to start it....Please help if you can....thanks everyone :p

Clean the plugs,hook up to some fresh fuel and make sure you either put it in a tank of water or hook earmuffs to the lower intake vents with a good supply of water.Changing the lower gear lube is easy and something that a buyer usually checks.Charlie
