I have a tired Volvo 130 and 280 outdrive on my boat so thinking of repowering to a later model ( maybe Merc) motor and (Alpha) outdrive. Is that do-able with little transom modifications?

That's what I was afraid of. I might as well patch that hole and hang a 50-70hp 4 stroke. Thanks so much for your reply.

they made the AQ series up until the mid 90's

get a V8 and duoprop drive, drop it in and go boating.

What shape is your transom in ?
It would be a shame to hunt for something to fit the hole, only to find when you get the old transom assy out that you need to do the transom.
That would open up more power options for you since you'd be cutting a new hole anyway.

If you can find an AQ205 VP and decent 280/290/290dp, you would be right.
The AQ205 or 431 is a great motor. V6 MG engine with the quadrajet 4 barrel carb. Produces 205hp which is only slightly less than the big v8's of that era did....and a fraction of the weight.
