hey guys, looking for a 90 - 115 to turn into a jet drive. Ive only owned one merc (25 hp), and im mostly an OMC guy. I have found a 1990 mercury 100 hp, and am considering getting it and buying a jet unit for it. My boat currently has a 70 jet, and its just not enough. Is the 100 2 +2 a reliable motor, or would I be better off getting a v4 90 or 115? Thanks guys.

The Merc 3 and 4 cylinder motors are better than the OMC V4s, I've had both with a jet on it. The 100 is fine, some people say the 2+2 is a little quirky at the transition RPM, but they run well.

Just watch the max RPM, those 2+2 4s didn't take too kindly to over revving

A lot depends on the maitenance and upkeep the previous owner did to it.

Find some 125 hp carbs and install the rev limiter and it will be good to go.....

If you take the 100 hp and puit a jet on it you will still have ~ 70 hp in equivalent power.
