Which new E-Tec HP is best for my '74 SeaRay SRV 190

The new outboards seem very heavy to me, when compared to the old motors.
Example: the current '73 135 hp Evinrude is less than 300 lbs. The 2017 E-tec 115 hp is 390 lbs. and the 150 hp is 418 lbs. The SeaRay has a CG max rating plate of 150 hp.
I think that the ROT says that hp should be at least 80% of the max so then, the hp for this boat should be 120 - 150 hp ? The E-tec 90 hp is only 320 lbs. but seems like it would be under powered. Should I be concerned about the extra weight ? I really don't want to move fuel to the bow to counter balance.
The SeaRay is center line 18' 2" - beam 89" - trans 84". dry weight 1600 lbs.

Thanks in advance for your responses.
Ed

Walk to the back of your boat, that's far more weight than the new motor will add, most of the time a hundred pounds or so doesn't make a difference.

On a boat that size people will frequently add a kicker that weighs 100 lbs or more and it doesn't create any issues.

Don't skimp on HP.

A boat is rated for Max Passengers and Max OB to have fun, if will be boating with less boaters on a constant basis, don't need to go for Max HP-OB. Whichever less HP you choose can always go for a prop maximization to pull wot revs middle to max wot rpm range factory stated and have fun.

Happy Boating

Thanks to all.
ondarvr - good observations, i scratched the 90 hp from my shopping list. and i had a dream where i bought the 90 hp and couldn't get it to plane.
ezmobee - very good idea to look at the 115 HO it only costs $645 more. Don't yet know how they get the "HO" when all the specs. are the same as the 115 hp.
You have E 90 hp experience and i can relate about the your move to TnT since my current '73 135 hp doesn't have it. Nice job on your Starcraft.
sea Rider - good ideas about load and prop tuning. it's just me and my GSD "Harpo" pic. included.

If only one boater and other 4 legged one, don't need to go for full HP rated. Have specilalized myself in running way underpowered OB's with maximized props revving at their fullest max wor range while running with max 2 passengers.

If nothing in between a 90 and a 150, a 115 should be the way to go.

If your old 135 doesn't have TnT plus is crank rated at 135, a 115 prop rated 11 with TnT should beat the pants off it. That's the route I'd take an avoid the cost, weight and complexity of a 6 cylinder.

I would put a 150hp or a 135 HO on it. The 6, due easier and better exhaust tuning will be easier on gas at cruising speeds than a 4, plus it will provide much better holeshot and if ever needed top speed.

definately go with the 135. it really is a detuned 150, which actually puts out about 145 h p. Manufacturers have a 10percent leeway on hp actual ratings.

Go for the max HP the boat is rated for. Trust me, you'll never be sorry. Experience talking.

My neighbor repowered his 18' wellcraft with a merc 115 to a Yammie F150 last summer.

Good move. Great hole shot. Best of all, can't hear it running.

Thanks.
sullmate the 135hp doesn't make sense to me since it weighs the same as the 150.
dingbat don't want a Yammie - too much $ to service and winterize (also no break-in). Also, note with E-tecs you get a 10 year warranty. (limited time offer)

Sorry but up here in Canada it is 10 year and 1500 hours. I would double check as I'm sure it would be the same in the U.S.

That's a nice looking boat!

The invoice on a 2016 150 ETEC is about $13k. If I was going to buy a new engine I would get the ETEC 150!

Cheers, Rick
