Is it OK to store an outboard resting on the skeg, almost vertically? It is strapped to a solid shelf, leaning against the shelf and the wall, but most of the weight is on the skeg. Is that OK? The outboard is 180lb, 25HP.

It shouldn't bend.
I found that if you can't put it on a rack or a permanent bracket.
I wrap the cover in foam and stand it on it's head.
Most of the weight is in the powerhead.
They used to ship them either laying down or upside down.
Being top heavy they don't fall over as easy.

It will be fine without any issues. The skeg takes a lot more abuse then the simple wight of the engine itself. JMHO

Gee, strap a couple of 2X6s together and spread the weight of the engine to the skeg and gearcase bottom.

We have a couple old Volvo DP outdrives that I kept as spares.. Picked them up and slammed them down into the dirt... I imagine they'll be fine for many years. :)

In the end, I bolted a couple of 2x4 to a strong shelf and just hanged the outboard on them like on a transom.
