What year did Mercury change control cables from 8 pin to 9 pin?

Mercury changed the number of connectors to add the overheat alarm, PTT up and down and a PTT gauge, over the years. The original functions were Ign, Sol, +, Ground, choke, tach.

Your best bet is to match the style of the motor harness connector. What year are you looking to match?

OK match your electrical plug. I will guess you have a round, 6 pin plug with two PTT (green/white, blue/white) wires with separate bullet connectors?
