can someone tell me the reason this type of petrol fuel filter/water separator https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_...4301&search123=fuel+filters&intAbsolutePage=1
isn't supposed to used in a boat with inboard motors?
is it just the see through 'glass' bowl?
is the model with a metal bowl the proper one?
or the filters themselves?
can someone please put up a link for a suitable type for a inboard petrol fuelled boat
cheers

My guess would be because it has the drain as the main reason. The is a spot that could leak.

^^x2 Metal only in a I/O boat. That's why you don't see the old style fuel pumps with the glass bowl sold anymore. Any replacements sold today have the metal bowl on them now. This is a USCG regulation.

gent,thanks for clearing that up,

next question, should a system like the one above ...and the factory one/s on a mercruiser... stop water (specially salt water ) that has gotten into the fuel tank...somehow... getting into the motor and causing massive damage?

Ayuh,.... Those filters stop water, by gravity,...

Once the can is full, or nearly full of water, the water will pass the filter,....

If yer gettin' water into the tank, fix that problem 1st,...
Then carry spare filters til the water is finally Gone,...

Thanks Bondo ,
so the water ingress was probably through the filter system then...bugger LOL
we will fix the problem of water getting into the tank\s ( 4 ) by fitting some sort of locking fuel cap and ( hopefully ) by moving the boat to a more secure berth than the isolated swing mooring it is on now,

one tank is being replaced ( not the problem one ) and others drained to be certain there is no water in them,
cheers

Ayuh,..... While yer at it, Check yer tank Vent tubin',...

From the hull vent fittin', it's Gotta loop, Up, 'n then back down to the tank,...

Bad vent location, 'n Bad vent lines are probably the 2 commonest reasons for water in the fuel,...

Re: inboard petrol fuel filter/water separator question

finally found the time to have a good look at the vent lines,
oh dear...
not a loop...up, down or sideways... in any of them,
thanks for suggesting we look at them as well bondo,
think we have found our problem
