Engine oil synthetic?

My 1987 mercruiser 260hp V8 5.7L calls for 25W-40 full synthetic oil. But in my engine it has regular oil in it. Mercury said to use synthetic but the local marina said use regular cause it might screw stuff up inside if it's mixed.
Opinions?

Not another oil debate..........

Use whatever oil you want to. Changing to Synthetic wont hurt anything.... in my humble opion.

I run just plain ol 10-W40 in my boats... i change the oil aleast once a season 3 to 4 months long...Again just my opion on what i do with my boat motors......

im gonna use 20W-40 regular oil in my engine.

Whatever you are Comfortable with.....If you are in doubt... something's not right.
