Without knowing what vintage and what heads, there is no way in the word to answer your spark plug question.
Mercruiser gives a recommendation for their oils, if you don't want to use it, then use what you want. Whatever you want has been recommended by somebody sometime on this forum. Look through this forum, especially the very last page, or should I say first page.
