I'm new to the I/O world and searching for a replacement oil for sae30..... I know another oil thread sorry! couldn't find anything in the search.... was in contact with amsoil and they recommended their 10w-30/sae30 synthetic heavy duty diesel oil instead of their 10w-40 marine oil and said it was closer to the volvo penta new replacement[FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif] for the SAE30. Has anyone used this oil before or does any recommend this or disaprove using?Or just use the factory 10w-40 volvo penta oil?
thanks.

you can use either, however if it was me, I would be using Rotella 15W40. simply because its $11/gallon and delivered to the house by Amazon

While straight 30 was recommended at one time, that's not the only choice. You can use the Merc 25/40 that is available all over, or Shell Rotella/Chevron Delo 15/40. Some manuals also recommended 20/50. Just do not use a light viscosity car based oil like a 5/30 or 10/30, these have viscosity index improvers that can break down (not in syn, and not in the Merc oil) and the oil may not protect as well at high rpm use common with boats.

If the spec is the old 30w oil, it's likely an older engine and would prefer some mineral oil and not synthetic blends. A lot to be said for the lubrication properties of the good old mineral, in certain applications.
A good 15w-40 mineral will be just spot on.

15 years of salt water use. still running the same block with re-man heads.
never flushed on a mooring all season.
