I have a 1996 Glastron with a 4.3l Mercruiser and am wondering how I can be sure it has Vortec heads? I usually read this forum to gain insight on repairs and maintenance and I came across a thread, from a knowledgeable member, that indicated that some heads for these motors were not necessarily Vortec's.
How can I tell?

8 intake bolts = vortec heads
12 intake bolts = non-vortec heads

Count the bolts on the intake. The Vortec has 8 total, the pre-Vortec has 12 total.

Typically, boats didn't get them until 1997 so you have to go by the serial number or count the bolts. If you really counted 8 then they are Vortec.

This where the holes are for a pre-Vortec on the gasket
