92 Four Winns Horizon 20'. I'd like advice on cleaning and painting the outdrive. It had been kept at a freshwater lake for years then moved to the ocean harbor for 1 year.
The new owners did have a scuba cleaning service clean it every 2 weeks but the channel where it was anchored was not very deep and it was nearly on the bottom. It still had some build up of tube worms(?) and other barnacle like deposits.

( I always get an error when I try to upload a picture)

the main issue is you keep your boat in water, marine life will start to grow on it as soon as the boat starts sitting. the best recommendation I have, use the boat more often, paint the drive with a good anti-foul paint and repaint on the annual haul-out for the drive inspection and bottom paint work.

If you are keeping this boat in salt or brackish water the other links don't really apply. You are going to be using an anti fouling paint for aluminum as I do every year. So go on both Interlux's and Pettit Paints websites and start reading. There are a few different systems out there now and I've been using Primicron and Trilux 33 from Interlux . After priming I use a combination of spray and brush on. 3 coats to keep the growth at bay ..

If it will be kept in the water and the water is is salt you will need to antifoul paint it to keep the growth off of it

I have it in the trailer now and will keep it there.

(Still can't upload pictures #$#@#)

So whats the best way to clean growth off an outdrive ? I do plan on cleaning, priming and painting.

Start with some toilet bowl cleaner and a scrub broom.Wear protection as this is an acid.Let it soak for a few minutes and when done scrubbing the growth rinse and pressure wash the rest.Rinse thoroughly. Now you are ready for some light sanding depending on the paint condition.Prime bare spots with zinc chromate or zinc phosphate and finish with Merc phantom black.
