Setting a tack to proper cylinder

I have a 4 cyl; 2.5 mercruiser i/o. Which way do i turn the cylinder dial gauge on the back to set to 4 cyl? DO you turn to the right or left. It is set at 8 cyl; or does it matter.

To be safe, turn it to 6, then 4. Going directly from 8 to 4 may encounter a stop built into the switch, while turning through 6 will avoid any stop.
