so? my limited plumbing knowledge says to put either teflon tape or pipe dope on the engine drain plugs but it doesn't look like there was anything on them when i took them out. the only negative i could see from it might be a piece breaking off and getting in the engine?

What type of drain plug. Teflon tape on pipe plugs is ok, however straight thread plugs often have a gasket (oil pan, gear case, etc)

There's very little pressure there.
I don't use any sealant.
I just do them by hand and give them a 1/2 a turn or so after that.
If it does leak a bit it will usually rust up and stop.

if its the coolant plugs, then yes, pipe plugs, most likely brass. pipe dope or tape is fine.

I use nothing. Pipe plugs are taperd, as long as you get them in straight, they wont leak.

I don't use anything for the cooling drain plugs. It won't hurt anything though.
