removed from :1979 Mercruiser 470 3.7L 224CID
serial upper mount - 5428388
I painted this silver.
Nobody told me you can't paint a mercruiser anything but black or they'll think its a Volvo.

I only painted one side silver.
After Several months I flipped it, took a picture of the unpainted original side. Months later now, still no offers.
Its smaller than an alpha 1 gen 2
Either this sterndrive is NOT an alpha 1 gen 1,
or it is and its not in demand at all,
or I just haven't listed the gear ratio (which I can't figure out)
or something else that's preventing anyone from wanting to buy it.
please tell me your thoughts.

superninja, it seems to me that you are parting out parts for sale. And I learned many decades ago that presentation sells thing faster then anything else. That said, if I were you I would totally strip the flaking paint off and prime it and paint it back to the gloss black color for that "presentation". You will find a lot more interest. JMHO

No one is going to be interested without the gear ratio. Those gears are way to difficult to change so buying the correct ratio is everything. I had one in excellent condition for sale for two summers before finding a buyer and mine was in original paint. Having painted it may have caused others to think something is being covered up.

Ayuh,.... What you have is an MC-1 drive, many times incorrectly called a pre-Alpha,....

It will bolt on, 'n run in -place of an Alpha 1, up to 1990, as the Alpha 1, Gen.II came out in '91,....

The MC-1 was used from the late-60s through the late-70s/ early 80s,...

The 1.84:1 gear ratio is used for the 470 motors,....
It can also be used with an I6 motor, or the V6 motors, in heavy hulls,....

I'm starting to think this is not a 1:84 gear ratio & I don't recall how I came up with that conclusion. I literally have no way to find out, the shop manuals repeat themselves with contradicting info.

It going to be a slow mover as not much demand for that ratio and whats your asking price as may be to high...about $350 is average price for one of these now.

Put it in gear. Rotate the shaft 1 turn, check how much the prop rotates. Or rotate it 10 turns and count how many times the prop rotates.

Mark the input shaft and mark the prop shaft. a mark on the housing and gear case so its easier to tell how things are progressing.
Input should turn 1.84 to the props once. Common ratios 69 - 83 are 1.98,2.5L 1.65 3.7L,1.84 4.3,(470)1.5 for the V8s
