We recently purchased a used 2007 Mercury 115hp 4stroke engine. We knew the engine was blown, are hoping to rebuild. When we got it home and put on a stand, we were able to finally see the full extent of the damage.

The bottom cylinder piston connecting rod snapped, and blew a hole around the entire block. Blew the oil filter off, and blew a hole all the way around the crank to the opposite side of the engine. We are hoping to rebuild it, it is too new of a motor to find a rebuild one, so we may have to start with a empty new block. How do you tell if a crank is still good or should we just replace it?

Just wanted some input on what may have caused this to happen? We have no info from the previous owners.

With that kind of damage, why not buy another motor, and use that one for parts......

We have been told this is the first year mercury went to their own block, years before they were interchangeable with yamaha blocks, and we have found those engines. But have not been able to find a rebuilt block for this year. (except for directly from mercury, at a cost of 7,000+) We have little into this engine, and are hoping to rebuild it at a reasonable-ly discounted price, and we are going to build a boat around it.
