I am researching a 1979 Bomber Fish/Ski Boat with a 140 Mercury (blue band around case) outboard engine. Now, the boat is showroom clean and preserved, pretty much, including the engine. Is this engine good to have, in excellent running and cosmetic order? I have to get more details on it this weekend. This is all I know.

I am not sure they made a 1979 Merc 140HP motor. They may have, or it might be 1978. Take a look under the wrap cowling and see if she has a distributor ignition or 6 coils. The 6 coils are a better ignition, and the changeover occurred in mid-1979. Inspect the wiring on the motor, as that normally goes bad by this point.

You will want to replace the gear oil, and rebuild the waterpump on that motor, if you buy it.

The factory sales brochure shows the 1979 140 hp model in the line-up.----An excellent motor.-----If you pick it up the absolute first thing to do is to install a new impeller.

Good engines, powerful and durable. Electronics on them can be iffy but wouldn't scare me away from one.
