Hello.
I acquired a 1986 35hp with power trim mercury off kijiji with controls and I guess I'm having a hard time figuring out where and how the cables attach to the motor.

I know how to Rev the throttle and switch gears by hand but I just can't seem to figure out how to attach the cables.

I've tried searching the Internet high and low for the last week but can't seem to make any progress.

I can post some pictures from my laptop tomorrow but any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If I've left out any pertinent information please let me know and I can fill in the gaps.

Thank you :)

I had an '80's 85 but it's been a long time. The input to the engine is probably on the right (looking at the engine from the front) for the cables, left for the wiring harness. Going in from the detent/rubber grommet in the engine cowl first thing should be a pair of slots with a "slide out of the way" cover (to hold things in place) over it. The Quicksilver/Mercury cables usually have a barrel threaded on the solid brass end adapter of the outer sheath end of the cable. This barrel is moved up and down the cable end to adjust the length.

Continuing directly into the engine you should find the throttle and shifter rods which will have a 1/4 to 5/16" threaded stud sticking up with a nylon inserted SS lock nut. This is where the center wire/protruding end adapter of the cable attaches.

Numerous times the adjustments have been discussed on here and are in the archives, some under my "handle". In short, position the engine where you want it, like slowest speed and N gear: Set the single handle control to N with the fast idle lever, if it has one, all the way down....no fast idle.

With the barrels out of their mount, connect the end of the cables under the nut and just bring the nut down to where it touches the cable adapter, leave it barely touching to allow for any movement when operating.

Next, observe the position of your barrels vs the slot where they reside. Spin the barrels up or down the cable till they are aligned with the slots, push them in and recover. If that doesn't quite get them where you want them a little "pre load" may be necessary to take up any slack in the system.
