So, picked up this decent running 1979 9.8 mercury outboard.. The biggest issue is the pull cord rope is old and I can't trust it on the river. Now the big problem is I can't get the top nut off the starter assembly is there some sort of trick to getting it off that I'm not seeing?? I've tried everything!!!

This the way - pay attention to the left hand thread nut it turns opposite ie. right to loosen! Merc110-starter.jpg

Yeah, the nut is definitely stripped then, I changed the cord on my lawn mower not two weeks ago and knew that it was left threaded :/ Do you think I could cut the nut off with a Dremel and jimmy rig something else where the nut was???

Yeah it was stripped, took the dremel to it replaced the rope and now it's held on with a pair of vice grips, thinking and taking a die to it to get it rethreaded.... At least I have a new rope lol....
