86 Mercury xr2 150 Lower Unit

replacing water pump and think the gears seemed loose. I drained the oil and there were no metal shavings. Is there supposed to be some play in there?

Not sure what you mean by " loose " here.---And are you pulling up on the driveshaft when checking this ??

I can move the drive shaft side very easily and the prop shaft seems to have some back and forth movement.

in n out prop shaft, normal on all...side ta side drive shaft, only pre-load gear case....
