1994 Merc 40hp 2 stroke, grinding noise in revers

Hi

Recently purchased 1994 Merc 40hp, 2cyl, 2 stroke. Runs good forward & neutral,but has grinding sound in reverse gear and wont lock down in reverse. Dealer had replaced water pump impeller when purchased. Any ideas re cause of grinding noise?

You may need to adjust shift cable.---------Also you must shift an outboard with a quick firm motion.----------No " granny shifting " is to be done.

Idle needs to be about 700 rpm,remote cable may need adjusting. You could try unhooking the shift cable and see if it shifts by hand.
