So i took the distributor/magneto off and cleaned the points and set it to 0.010". When you're testing for spark, all I have is a digital meter, what setting do you put it on? I tested the positive and negative coming off the coil and was getting like 1.5 does that mean it's a bad coil?Test for spark before re-installing the magneto.
I also noticed that the mercury is all gone out of the mercury switch any recommendations for a replacement? I know they have ball switches now. or could I just bypass it?

Shouldn't need any sort of meter to test for spark. With the cap OFF, hold the coil tang about 3/4-inch away from a bench vice (or other large metal object) and the mag body against said vice. Spin the mag CLOCKWISE and note if you have spark. If no, then move on to checking for other issues. Generally, if those old coils appear to be in good shape, .ie no cracks or arcing tracks, they're likely good. Most mags I've had issues with were either with dirty or worn points or bad condensers.
Just use an ohmmeter to check the continuity between each wire and the post in the cap it should be close to zero, those are solid core wires not carbon and they are held in the cap by little screws.
