'71 Mercury 650 reverse

Hello people.......This motor (4 cyl) has been in the family since it was new.......I have had it last 20 years personally.......it runs great, but 2 years ago, replaced shift/throttle cables....and since...motor does not want to go into reverse at boat launch......if I get her off the trailer and into deeper water, run it a few minutes at a pretty fast pace, stop, and then shift into reverse........everything is fine........quite sure this is something I have screwed up.........not sure how to correct it.........any help truly appreciated

????-----When it is on the trailer is the motor running when you try to shift ?------You may need to adjust the brass barrel on the shift cable.----Move it towards the boat.

thank you.........i was hoping it was that simple......motor is running on the trailer......put her in reverse....no movement......but, everything is fine after going forward a few minutes.......boat is put away for the winter......but I hope this will do the trick in the spring
