Can I change the needle valve and seat on the lower carb without removing carb from engine? According to one diagram I saw, removing the top of the bowl accesses the needle valve and float. Is this correct. Thanks.

Thanks, racerone. I paid a mechanic to change the needle valve and seat in the top carb because I had never done it before. In looking around it is something that I think I can do and save some money.

A lot of those old Mercs had foam floats. These tend to dissolve in today's gasoline-alcohol blended fuel. You might replace all three of them.

Thanks, Chris. I hope to work on it today. I will check the floats. I use alcohol-free 91 octane, but don't know what kind of fuel the previous owner used.

You will want to use the hard plastic floats, as replacements for the foam ones. Make sure any you find in the carbs are not cracked.
