Can someone school me on the shift rod. Specifically what I should look for while I'm putting the lower unit back on. When I reassembled the lower unit after redoing the water pump, the shift rod just inserts into the lower unit. How do you know you have it right? It doesn't "snap in" and the is no screw or pin holding it in place. How can I be confident I have it connected correctly. Thanks for all the help on this forum. Everyone's been great.

The end of the lower shift shaft is splined. The upper shift shaft is splined as well. You must align the splines in neutral and mate the two shift rods.

Uh that model the shift rod screws into shift cam. The shift rod and cam has to be installed before prop shaft is installed...
