Hi

The steering bracket on my 1974 Mercury 402 snapped. The part on the motor that the steering arm bolts to.

Any idea on how to remove it? There seems to be two bolts that were tight but when loosened they just spin freely and dont thread out.

Must any other parts from the motor be removed to take off this bracket?

thanks

Hi Chris

I have a 50hp Mercury for parts which hopefully has the same bracket, I thought the removal process was to take off what looks like from the diagram: part number 12. But it seems to bolted to the part I was trying to remove?

thanks

Part #12 is your swivel rod which bolts to your upper motor mounts. You will need to pull the powerhead and then remove the exhaust extension to get to the nuts on the motor mount bolts. It would be much easier if you can replace #16, as it looks to bolt onto part #12. Just so you know, the steering bracket on your 402 may be unique to the smaller Mercs. The 50 HP motor may have a one piece steering arm/swivel rod, like a lot of the larger Mercs.
