The problem has been diagnosed as an air leak between crankcase mating surfaces. Results in hard starting and poor idling. I'm told that this problem costs more to remedy than the engine would be worth. Are there any old marine mechanic tricks to patch over my problem for a year or two?

Just fix it, about 5 hr time, sealer, gasket and reed block as these are bad about wearing out labirinth seal and will cause this problem also
