Installing a fuel pump diaphragm kit. Instructions say to install retainer into the check valve and install check valve and retainer into fuel pump body. Next instructions say to break retainer rod from the retainer, reinstall rod into retainer cap and use a punch to tap down the rod until it is flush with the top of the retainer. I am a little confused with this process as I would think the small piece left in the retainer, after breaking the rod and reinserting it, could work its way out of the retainer into the fuel pump. Would it not be best to not break the rod, push it through the retainer then trim the rod on both sides? Thanks
