The issue is that moving the boat into forward and accelerating, it takes an inordinate amount of lever travel to make anything happen. If you start at 12o-clock in neutral, it is at 10-oclock before it starts to do anything and pretty much is against the stop before it really gets full throttle at the engine. I have adjusted it in testing far enough we start to raise the idle speed at the engine end. Is there an adjustment at the throttle end or a spacer or something to give it more authority? Seems like we might have a mismatched throttle control box if that is possible. Boat seems to be running well despite that so we have made some progress.

Hi kblack, check the travel of the throttle at the engine. Even if it's got a lot of travel but your carbs or throttle body get to fully open (WOT) then its fine, if you can get more throttle out of it with the control lever at the stop, then you should be able to adjust the cable at it's fixed point on the engine. Let us know how you go.

If using a single handle remote, the first quadrant of movement is for the shift function and the throttle remains constant.....at idle rpm.
As movement is continued, the throttle linkage is engaged and it starts to pull the carb butterflies open and advance the timing. On most engines, once the movement of the throttle cable starts, it is a smooth process to firewall position.

Why not take the cowl off and have someone move the lever while you watch the butterflies in the carbs. Have the person move the lever at a smooth constant rate. The butterflies should go from closed to full open (parallel with the air flow) in a constant, smooth manner. If so, things are working as designed.

It's possible the cams inside the throttle box are worn, giving too much play before things start to happen. Wouldn't hurt to pop it open and see. You'll be looking for where the center cam (that the main handle bolts to) actuates onto the throttle and shift rotors.
