2012 115hp Mercury four stroke air filter crumpled

Air filter crumpled on my new 2012 Mercury 115hp four stroke. Left me dead in the bay this weekend. After reading some posts this is common problem with these motors. Has any one used oil resistance foam on the filter housing? I hate to pay $75.00 dollars for new filter to fall apart in couple of months. Where can I get some oil resistance foam? Has anyone tried this and does it work. Right now the motor cranks but only runs for couple of minutes before dying. No alarms noted.
My guess the air ratio is not correct with the filter being off the motor so it shuts down. Any suggestions?

Hi there, it looks like (thanks to the thread below) Mercury has recently come out with a new filter design so you may just want to give the new one a try. Looks like Merc is on try number three so hopefully (usually) the third time's a charm applies here. Good luck to you.

Mercury changed the part.
first it was 35-897575t01 (disintegrating filters)
then changed to 35-897575t02 (don't know what changed?)
then changed again to 35-8M0082911 (the last change the element is different)
