2005 60hp Mercury Misfire

A friend's motor developed a slight misfire the other day after he opened it up a little bit (normally just idles the pontoon). I checked it out yesterday and when I pulled the electrical connector off of the #2 coil, there was no change in the engine. Also, on top of that, the electrical connector was melted & deformed as well as there being some brown liquid/oil on it, as it was also inside the coil where the connector connects.

So it looks like I need the connector, but what else could be going on here to make it do something like this?
