hi all
i recently bought a 1996 15hp mercury that runs great had it for a good run yesterday, went about 30km up a river at about 75 percent throttle and noticed water that was leaving pee hole was hot enough to steam, not burn hand but close.(this motor has thermostat and only shoots water on and off at idle, all the time when moving) is this normal?
thanks

You should measure the water temperature with a thermometer of some kind. Or better yet measure the head temp.
160 degrees F will scald you,140 isn't pleasant either. If you can hold your hand in the stream it's probably less than that.
As others have said it's never a bad idea to replace the impeller on a new to you motor.

Most outboard use a 143 dergee thermostat. It is best to repair the water pump as needed ASAP as internal damage to the motor can happen, and cost a lot more than repairing the pump. A motor that has set for sometime can have the impeller take a set and not pump as much water as it should. Changing out the stat is also a good thing to do at the same time. Spend the $$$ now and you will not end up a creek and have to paddle. JMO

what do you mean by impeller take a set? and are you referring to stator? thanks
ps 2 weeks and my season is over so any work i do will be on the off season, just waiting on a shop manual from amazon.

Hi ace, what is meant by the impeller taking a set, is that the impeller can harden and will not be as effective, or efficient. When the impeller is hard its doesn't pump the same volume of water as when new or is used at least once a month. So the water speed is slower so the temperature can rise a little or even a lot causing fatal damage. The small cost of an impeller vs the cost of a new motor is a no brainer. The tell tale, ( pee hole) is usually before the thermostat. So its function is to tell you that the pump is working long before the exhaust water comes out of the leg. Happy boating

Once you have identified the correct impeller kit for your motor using the serial number and all other aspects of the motor, then replace all found in the kit. The one you've found in your previous post shows gaskets as well. When you pull the lower unit off, check the condition of the bolt threads. They cam get corroded. Clean the bolts with a wire brush and if you have an air compressor blow out any dust and crud out of the holes in the trunk. Lightly grease the bolts with a marine grease after youve replaced the impeller and all gaskets and seals the reinstall the gearbox. Hook up to water with muffs or in a tub of water and test the pump. You will notice a huge improvement in the water volume and realize how much iboats just saved you! !!!!!!
You are welcome

That kit should work for replacing the impeller and lower plate. The key that holds the impeller from spinning on the drive shaft can get lost very easy when taking the impeller off , so be sure to watch it and do not lose it. If there is any deep groves in the plate or the upper cup, they should be replaced at this time. Also check all the rubber seals for hardness, as they could leak .

Barramundi knows what can happen when the impeller has taken a set.
