Motor sat for 10 years and pistons froze up. Soaked in solvent and got them freed up. Now cranks easily but won't start. Thought I had spark. Orange and green wires come from stator and go to coils. Noticed green one had insulation wore off and was shorting to a bolt on engine. Noticed that both wires had brittle insulation and insulation was wore off where they go thru cable retainer on the way to the coils. Can I butt splice new wires on or do I have to buy a new stator? May be more things wrong but this is really an apparent issue. Tried to upload picture but it said a jpg image file was invalid data.

No reason that you cannot splice a new wire . . . Probably best to solder it together and use heat shrink insulation. I made a new wire harness for my 1969 Mercury 7.5 due to the same sort of issue.
