power plug into mercury engine

I have a 1966 mercury 950ss that im going to replace with a 1978 mercury 1400, the power plug looks the same, did mercury hook up the same things on the plugin on both years? when you replace motors do you have to replace the wiring harness to fit that motor? thanks

Johnny, I would recommend you look at the wiring diagrams for both motors. They will be found at the maxrules web site. The diagrams should have the pin-out for both motors. That 1978 motor should have the battery-powered CDI ignition with a distributor and single coil.

thinks chris i did, i am going to replace everything, the mercontrol shifter and the whole wiring harness, any tips on getting the controler off, have you ever done it? the schematic of the inside of the control box doesnt look serviceable...by me.
