Hi I have a 2001 mercury 90hp outboard motor that runs great. The only issue is when putting into gear the motor slams into gear. Does anyone know what the issue is and how to fix it. Thanks.

Describe what you mean by "slamming into gear". What is the idle RPM. A shift/throttle box with an issue may cause the engine rpm to increase before the shifter engages. Misadjusted throttle and/or shift cables may also be an issue.

I have a '02 2 stroke 90. Idle rpms are 675 +/- 25. If your rpms aren't somewhere around there when you shift, expect what you are experiencing. Problem could be as Silvertip suggested, or if you are using a Commander 2000 with the fast idle lever on the top rear of the box, maybe you don't push it all the way down before shifting.

Outboard should not be " eased into gear "---The shifting is to be done with a quick firm motion.----In other words you slam it into gear to prevent damage.
