Hello. I am trying to remove my flywheel to access the stator for replacement. I bought a Mercury flywheel puller, but before I use it, I need to open up the main bolt in the middle of the flywheel. I cant turn it without the entire flywheel turning also. Is there a tool or a way to hold the flywheel from turning? Also, when opening the bold, does it open by turning clockwise or counter clockwise? any help would very much be appreciated.

1992 Mercury 40HP outboard btw
Thanks!

I use one similar to this, from the local napa store. However most of the time I rattle nut off with an impact, then re-tourque with a torque wrench.

I used a piece of angle iron from local hardware store. The angle iron with series of holes works, though you can drill your own. Used about 3 feet and bolted the end onto two of the smaller bolts on the outer section of the flywheel assembly. Good luck
