How do you get the throttle and shift cables off at the motor? I see the two things you flip to release the stops. But it looks like the throttle cable you have to get at from the side and there is no access. Does that lower cowling come off or if it is loose do you have enough room to get at it? The shift cable looks like you should be able to get off from the top. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: 1977 Mercury cable question

I have a lightly older model but I think they use the same type of cables. The engine end of the cables should be threaded through a barrel nut and when you flip the cable stops it should allow you to lift the barrel nut out of its recess. That should allow you to get the cable out. You probably want to mark the point where the cable is threaded on the barrel nut 'cause you probably need to get it back to that spot when you go to reattach it. Hope that helps.
