Help Throttle control will not lock into neutral

I am new here so I hope that I am doing this right. But I have a 2004 200 Merc carb SWB. My Throttle control on the boat was getting stuck last year and not changing gears either out of forward or reverse. Now it moves in and out of forward, reverse and neutral however it does not lock in neutral like it should. Any ideas on what part can be the problem or how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. I would like to not have to replace the entire controls.

Do you know what type of control you have? If not, do you see it in this list:

My throttle control is the REMOTE CONTROL 4000 PANEL (858690A1 THRU A11)

It may be a problem with the neutral lock retainer, however you will need the manual. Go here:

merc controls newest manual - Download - 4shared

Click on the Download button just under View Document and when the next page opens, click on the free Download. It will take a few minutes as it is a large file.

When you have it on your computer, see Section 5 for the 4000.
