Removed cap and proceeded to break rotor, I though it just pulled off like on autos. Most parts are hard to get. I found a complete distributor on ebay which (claimed) came of a working 1966 merc 500. It looks identical to the one I have. I know the part number for mine is 393-2799A7 or A20. How can I find out the part number for the 66 merc 500 to see if it is the same?

If your motor is a non-SS model (solid state ignition) and has the simpler magneto distributor, then the magneto from the 50hp will work just fine. Pretty much all of the Kiekhaefer 4-cylinder mags are interchangeable, although later ones are a bit sturdier than earlier ones.

How many wires coming out of the distributor? More than one on a stud on the side, it's not a magneto. Also a mag has a flat cap with the plug wires out of the side.

It is not magneto type. has three wires coming out the side that connects to a module with build in coil. High voltage wires come of the bottom

Does the ebay item look like yours?

Yes, can not see any difference. They posted different views and all look like mine.

A 1966 500 is a magneto. A 1967 500 is the same distributor you have. Maybe the seller got the year wrong.
