I took a friends boat out today. First time after winter sleep. Boat ran flawlessly, however it was running almost at 250 degrees for temp. That is almost all the way up on the guage. It was pumping water just fine so what is the norm temp for this motor? What is the possible problem? Thermostats??

At normal operating temp, you can touch the block for a moment, without burning yourself. If she is running hot, replace or test the thermostats, and rebuild the poppit valve.

It is peeing water no problem. If ir needed thermostats wouldn't it not be peeing?? I never heard an alarm, and it ran excellent. What is a poppet valve? Where is it?

No alarm. Runnin' fine. Think ya got a problem with tha gauge. Believe me, if its gettin' hot it won't run long at all. Turn tha key on. Ground tha wire coming off tha sensor on tha starboard head right under top plug ta tha block at tha terminal where it connects to tha harness. Don't take it loose, just ground tha screw its under. Should get an alarm. Steady beep. Best thing if your worried invest ina heat gun ta check real temps any where on tha motor...........jmo

Just thought about it. Yours may have a "bullet" (male end maybe) connector on it. Ground tha female or tha one comin' outta tha harness.

Poppit valve opens when water pressure builds up, to allow much more cooling water to circulate. The poppit valve should open at 2000RPM or so. It is low on the block on the starboard side of the motor. A service manual would help you find it.
