Hi everyone! Last year I bought a new Mercury 6hp 4 stroke outboard. I am fortunate to live on a small lake and I get to use my motor almost daily. With that in mind, I would like to have some spare parts on hand in case I have any minor headaches. My small dealer stocks pretty much nothing for this motor. I'll certainly keep routine maintenance parts like spark plug, fuel filter, washers for lower unit oil plugs, prop cotter pins, water pump kit, factory service book. This is not my first outboard, so I am going by past experience and thinking possibly also a spare starter rope and carb gaskets/orings would be good to have on hand. Any other suggestions or maybe spares will not be necessary?

Also do people change the water pump as a matter of routine or wait for a decline in flow?

Thanks for any tips. -Nick

Install a new impeller every 3 years.----Keep a spare spark plug on hand.------Keeping a reliable older 6 HP Johnson 2 stroke on hand is another option too.--I say that because I picked up a 2006 Mercury 4 stroke last year for parts as it was deemed not worth fixing ( ran low on oil ) by a careless owner.

Thanks. I gave away a very old Johnson many years ago and I still regret it. It was given to me by a neighbor after her husband passed. I didn't need it, didn't have time to fix it and didn't have internet to help me out so I gave it to someone else with greater interest. One of my dumber random acts of kindness. I think it needed seals, it had developed an air leak sitting after sitting many years.
