2005 Mercury 2.5HP Running Issues

Brought out my 2.5HP out to get it ready for spring fishing. It will start but will die when opening the choke after warming up - runs hard with choke closed and once warmed up I also try to lower speed and will also die out. It ran fine past few years with no problems. Has fresh gas/oil mix & spark plug is less than 1 year old.

Any other ideas on what I should check before I start to work on carb?

the carb is gummed up at the very least you need to run some cleaner through it and or rebuild the carb. I bet you left it to sit wilt fuel in it.
