Okay I have a strange one. Friend gave me this 20hp Mercury sn OD294199 it appears to be 1994. I cleaned the carb, she has good spark and it will start for a few seconds if I spray gas into the carb throat. First question I need to know is will this run okay for a few minutes with the lower unit off? I have had some smaller Mercs that would not start with the lower unit off don't know why other than a back pressure issue. I have it off to replace the water pump.
My main question is on the carb - it has a WMC-36 the motor is electric & manual start. There is a place for a plate (pn 9699) on top of the carb - the plate is missing but it sounds like on electric start that plate is not needed but I also think there is suppose to be a WMC-30 or WMC-37 carb on this motor according to the parts list for electric start. I don't understand why the carb would be different for electric versus non electric start.
