Greetings all. Upgraded to a newer motor. 2008 Mercury 50ELPTO (2-stroke). To date my newest motor was a 1986 Mercury 90HP Inline 6. Right now I don't have any gauges on my boat. I have an analog OMC tach with pole settings on the back. Ironic it's a OMC tach but instructions say it works with Mercury. Anyway, I have the 14 pin engine harness and there's an additional accessory harness coming out of the control box that has a black/purple connector and 5 other wires. Unfortunately I don't have a good wiring diagram to label the wire functions. I have no idea what any of them are for. I checked other threads for this info but came up empty. I bought a SELOC subscription today but think Im going to ask for a refund. Wiring diagrams didn't include my control box. For starters my questions are this?

1 - What are my gauge options? Can I use my analog tach? If so what wiring harness do I need. I looked on ebay a little bit and there appear to be a number of options.

2 - What diagnostic functions are available on this motor? Low oil Reservoir buzzer? Overheating buzzer? I want to have those working. I've heard that there can be a buzzer inside the control box? I haven't connected everything up yet to see if I get any beeps.

3 - Smartcraft... Does this engine support Smartcraft gauges? If so what would I need to make that system work?

Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge. If anyone has a good wiring schematic that would be great!

Thanks carholme! So I've yet to find any wiring schematics or data regarding this engine with a "stock" 14 Pin engine harness and 4000 series commander controller. Weirdness...

Thx for the second reference Carholme. Unfortunately that didn't have the detail and specificity that I needed. I went to the dealer yesterday to talk about my configuration. They confirmed that around 2006-2007 Mercury changed all of their wiring harnesses to be the 14-pin engine harness connection. Unfortunately Mercury's service media does not address this very well. It just so happens that my control "881170A13" is what has the 14-pin harness and although that particular control is usually used on Optimax or 4-stoke motors w/ Smartcraft, it works just fine with the newer 2-strokes as well. The basic 2-stroke models like my motor (50ELPTO) most definitely do not have Smartcraft capability. I will be using analog gauges and what I needed was an analog instrument adapter harness (part # 84-892990T01 or 84-892990A01). I found it weird that the bag and instructions were labeled differently "T" vs "A"? The instruction sheet that came with the harness is very clear. It even details which wires are not used. My options for gauges are: Tachometer, Oil level (Oil Injection Tank), Water Temperature, and Trim Gauge. I'll probably do everything but the trim gauge. Thanks to Carholme for contributing on this lil mystery and I hope others find it useful as well!
