1976 Mercury not shifting out of forward

When shifting the lever the shiny gear looking piece doesn't move but the top part does. So the motor stays in gear. Forward. What can I do to fix that? Thanks

Not sure on serial number but it is the 20 hp. It worked before today

Ayuh,.... My guess is that spline is Stripped,....

Drop the lower unit, 'n look,...
