What would cause a 1986 Mercury 90 hp, six cyl to catch fire upon being started?

Gas fumes and the starter brushes arching or a bad electric connection on the starting wiring, that will arch is can state a fire when starting the motor. Cracked fuel lined, flooding of the carb bowls. or any fuel leak and everything can make a fire teal quick when the cowling is on the motor. JMO

Is an engine that has suffered a fire salvageable? I assume the coils and all the electronics would have to be replaced.
